There are many ways to include the NHHC in your estate plans, either through a Will, Trust, Life Insurance Policy, etc. or a
Life Income Gift such as a Charitable Gift Annuity.
The right to plan your estate is a priceless privilege. With a will you can:
- Determine how, when, and to whom your assets will be distributed;
- Name the executor who will manage your estate according to your wishes;
- Create trusts for the benefit of your spouse, your children, or others;
- Reduce the burden of federal estate taxes; and
- Provide for those charitable organizations to which you are devoted
Wills commitments, which ultimately become bequests, are the key to guaranteeing the NHHC’s financial future.
The following are examples of gifts that can be made easily through your Will, with sample wording:
Specific Bequest:
This is the most common type of bequest, and specifies a specific dollar amount or specific asset (such as a piece of real estate or collector’s item). Standard wording is:
“I hereby give, devise and bequeath to the New Hampshire Humanities Council, Inc. of Concord, New Hampshire, the sum of $________(or ____% of my estate) to be used by said corporation for its general purposes.”
Residuary Bequest:
This allows loved ones to be taken care of first, with residuary funds then designated for the Humanities Council. An example of wording for this type of bequests is:
“I hereby give, devise and bequeath to the New Hampshire Humanities Council, Inc. of Concord, New Hampshire, all (or ___% percentage of) the rest and remainder of my estate, to be used by said corporation for its general purposes.”
Contingent Bequest:
This is for those whose first choice is to have their estate inherited by living relatives. If, for example, your first choice for a bequest does not survive you, the Humanities Council would inherit the specific asset or estate identified. It is usually a good idea to provide for a contingent beneficiary.
There are many planned giving instruments on the market allowing a donor to make a gift in which the commitment to the NHHC is made now and the Council’s receipt of funds may be delayed to a future time. Donors who make planned gifts normally receive tax and/or income benefits.
